How to choose a Shopify redesign and migration partner
Agency, freelancer, or solo senior. The questions that reveal who will protect your rankings and who is guessing.
Every Shopify partner promises redesigns, migrations, and conversions. Most proposals read identically, which makes choosing feel like guessing. It is not. Ten pointed questions separate teams that protect your rankings from teams that learn on your store. Here are the ones we would ask if we were hiring us.
Ask who does the work
Agency, freelancer, or principal led: each shape fits someone. What matters is meeting the person who will touch your theme and redirects, not just the salesperson. Ask who owns quality end to end and who answers when checkout breaks on a Friday. Vague staffing answers predict vague accountability later.
Ask how they protect SEO
Request a sample redirect map and ask how product schema gets validated on the new theme. Strong answers name URL inventories, 301 testing, sitemap resubmission, and Search Console monitoring by day. If redirects are described as automatic, keep interviewing. Automatic is how rankings evaporate.
Ask what the theme will be like to run
A good build leaves your team able to ship banners, collections, and landing pages without developer tickets. Ask for a walkthrough of sections and metafields, plus what editor training covers. Locked black boxes and mystery code are how simple changes become invoices forever.
Ask how they handle apps and speed
Every store accumulates apps. Ask how they audit the stack, which ones they would remove, and what performance budget the build targets. Teams that treat Core Web Vitals as a delivery requirement ship faster stores than teams that treat speed as a report you read afterward.
Ask what happens after launch
Clarify the monitoring window, what post launch support covers, and who owns the repo, docs, and access. Fixed scope with milestones beats open ended billing for redesigns and migrations. You should know what done looks like before anyone starts, including the rollback plan if DNS misbehaves.
Compare quotes on scope, not totals
Line up template counts, redirect volumes, integration lists, and content responsibilities side by side. The cheapest total with the thinnest scope is usually the most expensive project. Choose the proposal that names your risks specifically, because generic answers mean generic care for your store.
