Shopify Magic is not your store's AI

Magic writes copy. Sidekick assists. Neither knows your catalog, orders, or languages the way a custom layer can.

Every merchant in 2026 is being sold AI. Shopify ships Magic and Sidekick for free. If your strategy is turning those on, you do not have one. You have the same tools as every other store on the platform. The real gap is a layer that knows your catalog, your stock, your policies, and your voice.

What the free tools can't do

They do not speak your catalog as a system. They do not know stock levels, order status, or return policy well enough to answer like staff. They do not produce human checked translations for five storefronts from one feed. They do not search the way a customer types. That gap between generic assistance and store specific workflow is the part worth paying for.

Start with a workflow, not a model

The highest leverage store AI is usually unglamorous: bulk descriptions that match your voice, collection copy that is not stuffed, chat that deflects where is my order, search that finds the size in the color the shopper asked for. Rank candidates by ticket volume and content backlog. Ignore the demo reel and instrument the boring work first.

Keep a human in the loop

Generated copy that ships unreviewed will eventually invent a material, a size, or a claim. Run AI like a junior copywriter: generate, review, publish. Build the review step into the tooling so nothing reaches the storefront without approval. Speed without that loop is just faster mistakes with your logo on them.

Measure tickets, not tokens

Judge store AI on support deflection, time saved on product content, and translation throughput. If chat does not reduce repetitive tickets in 60 days, or bulk content still needs full rewrites, the workflow is wrong. Small, well scoped pilots beat platform wide rollouts because you learn what review burden each use case actually carries.
